Association of Consumer Reporting Agencies (ACRA)

Kroll is one of the five founding members of the Association of Consumer Reporting Agencies. ACRA was formed in 2001 as the first association specifically for consumer reporting agencies who provide background reports on job applicants and employees. ACRA’s charter is to:

  • Adopt self-regulatory principles governing the dissemination and use of personal data;
  • Set standards of professionalism for the background screening industry;
  • Be a voice regarding Federal and State legislation that affects obtaining and delivering information critical to employers in the hiring process; and
  • Provide direct and immediate access to certain information like state motor vehicle report information.

ACRA principles adhere to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), 15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq; the Drivers Privacy Protection Act., 18 USC §2721 et. seq. (Public Law 103-322); and other Federal and individual State laws that pertain to background screening.

ACRA members conform to significant restrictions on the access and distribution of public and non-public information and also have agreed to restrictions on the dissemination of Social Security numbers and dates of birth to commercial and professional subscribers. Furthermore, members agree that information from non-public sources about persons identifiable as minors will not be available to either the public or commercial and professional markets. Each ACRA member has pledged to be in compliance with the principles of our Association and agree to audits by a qualified independent auditor or assurance organizations.
